In the Talmud, there are numerous references to God. However, God’s actual name is not mentioned. This is due to the fact that the Talmud is a rabbinic commentary on the Hebrew Bible, and the rabbis believed that God’s name was too holy to be written down or spoken. Therefore, they would use other terms to refer to God, such as “the Holy One, blessed be He” or “the Blessed One.”
The Talmud describes a conversation that took place between Pharaoh and Mosheh, after Mosheh first asked Pharaoh to let the people go. “Who is your Elohim and why should I listen to Him?” Pharaoh asked. Mosheh’s answer was that of a simple man who saw something of Yahweh’s greatness in this world: “He existed before creation and will continue to exist, even if the whole world passes away. He made you and breathed into you the breath of life. His bow is fire and his arrows are flames. His shield is the clouds and his sword is like lightning. He provides for the rain and the dew and the crops of the field. He forms every embryo and causes a living being to emerge from a mother’s womb.”
There is also a passage in the Talmud that tells us that in the second century the Roman emperor Hadrian said to one of the rabbis: “I would like to see your Elohim.” “That is not possible,” the rabbi replied. But the emperor persisted and finally the rabbi told him to look at the sun. “I cannot,” the emperor replied, to which the rabbi concluded the conversation: “You admit that you cannot look at the sun, which is one of the subjects or creations of the Creator. How much less will you manage to look at the Creator himself!”
When Mosheh was instructed to build a Tabernacle, the Talmud says, he was greatly distressed. “The glory of the Most High fills every part of the world, so why should I build a trivial dwelling for Him? Will He really come to live in a tent?” But then Mosheh heard the answer of the Most High: “I do not think as you think, Mosheh. If I so desire, I can make my dwelling between 20 stiles on the North side and 20 stiles on the South side, and 8 stiles on the West side (according to the building plan in Sh’mot 26). And if I really want, I can make my dwelling and make my glory visible in a space of only one cubit by one cubit.”
