The position that changes my being human
If we abide IN the Messiah, we are counted AMONG the children and followers of Yahweh
The first verse of the book of Numbers, which is also the first verse of the passage called “Numbers,” is a special verse. It contains four words that begin with ‘Be-’: B’MIDBAR (In the wilderness), B’OHEL (In the tent), B’ECHAD (In or on a certain day, namely the first day) and B’SHANAH (In a certain year, namely the second year). “And Yahweh spoke to Mosheh IN the wilderness of Sinai, IN the tent of meeting, IN the first (day) of the second month, IN the second year after they had come out of Mitzrayim.” In Hebrew, ‘be-’ at the beginning of a word is usually translated IN. Usually, but NOT always. Notice the symmetrical pattern in this first verse: The first two occurrences of ‘IN’ refer to places – first a large place (wilderness) and then a smaller place (tent). The last two occurrences of ‘IN’ refer to periods – first a smaller period (a day) and then a larger period (a year).
In the rest of the passage, up to B’midbar 4:20, ‘be-’ is often used in the sense of ‘IN’ before a word. Three examples of this are “IN Yisra’el” (1:3), “IN the camp” (2:9), and “IN the set-apart place” (4:12). But there are many examples in this passage where ‘be-’ is also added before a word, but where it is NOT translated ‘in’. Examples of these are: AMONG the children of Yisra’el (3:41); ACCORDING TO the sheqel (3:47); AT the breaking up of the camp (4:5); the army WITH its numbered ones (2:8); OVER the utensils (4:16), and ACCORDING TO the number of names. This last expression is used 14 times in chapter 1. What further colours this picture is that the SECOND suggested reading for this week, Yesha’yahu 63:7-16, also contains words with ‘be-’ in front, further illustrating how diverse and dynamic this single Hebrew letter is, which can be added to the front of a word, and can significantly enrich the meaning of that word.
Why do we make such a big fuss today about a single letter in Hebrew that is sometimes translated IN, and other times BY, or WITH, or ACCORDING TO, or UNDER? Because this phenomenon in Hebrew set the stage for the coming of the Messiah and the kind of relationship we as believers would have with Him. Romans 9, which says that people would not just vaguely believe, but would specifically believe IN the Messiah, confirms that we should not underestimate the importance of ‘be-’ in the pre-Messianic Scriptures. In the Messianic Scriptures, the expression “in the Messiah” is used at least 85 times. “In Him”, referring to the Messiah, is used 60 times. “In the Master”, also referring to the Messiah, is used 50 times. “In whom”, referring to the Messiah, is used 20 times. “In the Name of Yeshua” is used 20 times. “In Yeshua” is used 10 times and “In his Name”, referring to Yeshua, is used 5 times. This is a total of 250 times that the believers' position is spoken of “in the Messiah”. And then we haven't said anything about THROUGH Him and UNDER Him and WITH Him – aspects of our relationship with Yeshua that are all included in the Hebrew “be-”.
