Resurrection
A very important subject, but also misunderstood
The resurrection ranks among the most crucial doctrines of true Torah believers. For Yeshua and the talmidim, the resurrection is the bedrock of the theology of the renewed covenant (Yochanan 11:25–26; 1 Corinthians 15:12–58). It lies at the heart of our salvation and the cornerstone of the history of redemption.
But, perhaps surprisingly, the TaNaKh doesn’t often explicitly mention the resurrection of the dead. While a few passages there indeed refer to the resurrection (Iyov 19:26–27; Yesha’yahu 26:19; Dani’el 12:1–2; Yechezq’el 37:1–14), this cardinal doctrine doesn’t seem to permeate the TaNaKh. Yet, when the Sadducees try to confound Yeshua about the nature of the resurrection, he responds not by citing any of these examples, but by quoting Sh’mot 3:6. Strikingly, he says,
“And concerning the dead, that they rise – have you not read in the book of Mosheh, at the bush, how Elohim spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the Elohim of Aḇraham, and the Elohim of Yitsḥaq, and the Elohim of Ya‛aqoḇ’? He is not the Elohim of the dead, but Elohim of the living. You, then, go greatly astray.” (Marqos 12:26–27)
