A commandment for a lifetime
Therefore יהוה your Elohim commanded you to perform the Sabbath day
The first use of the English word “Sabbath” in the Bible is seen in Sh’mot 16:23. This usage comes from the Hebrew word shabbath (Strong’s 7676). The word shabbath comes from a primitive root word shabath (Strongs 7673) which is translated in various places ‘cease’, ‘rest’, ‘away’, ‘fail’, ‘celebrate’, and miscellaneous other words, some of which precede this usage of the word shabbath. For example, B’reisheet 8:22 uses ‘cease’, and both B’reisheet 2:2-3 and Sh’mot 5:5 use ‘rest’.
Mosheh was transmitting to the nation of Yisra’el a Sabbath commandment from Elohim, four chapters before their arrival at Sinai where the tablets of stone (the Ten Commandments) were given. There is no indication that this Sabbath commandment was something that was newly initiated by Elohim at this time. In fact, other verses state that the Sabbath day of rest was initiated at creation (see B’reisheet 2:2-3; Sh’mot 20:11). Elohim said through Mosheh, “Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest...”. He did not say, “This is a new command: from now on, every seventh day is to be a solemn rest, etc.”
This appears to be a reminder to the Yisra’elites of Elohim’s Sabbath requirements, and specifically with regard to the collection and preparation of man, the daily food they were given. It must be remembered that the Yisra’elites had been in captivity for hundreds of years, and that they had not, during those years, enjoyed the freedom to obey Elohim’s Sabbath commands (cf. Sh’mot 5:1-5). Now that they were free from Mitzrayim and the restrictions of slavery, they needed to be reminded of their obligations as the children of Elohim. This verse reiterates that the seventh day was set apart by Elohim to be set apart from the rest of the week.
The Yisra’elites were commanded to rest solemnly. This does not mean that they were to be miserable, but that they were to be strict in their keeping of this period of rest. Even their food preparation was used as an example of Elohim’s intent: Other verses show that the man they collected on day six would be doubled, allowing them to have food on Shabbat. This verse states that they were to do any preparation and cooking of the man on the previous day, day six. Any left-over, unprepared man could be left unconsumed until the Sabbath without fear of it rotting (as it did on the other six days of the week). This was a miracle, which proved to the Yisra’elites on a weekly basis that Elohim continued to put His blessing on the Sabbath day. It also clearly revealed to them, after hundreds of years of slavery, which day was Elohim’s Sabbath.
The question arises: do you honour and respect the seventh day COMPLETELY as YAH wants us to do? Do you also, as the christians on their ‘sabbath’ on the first day, only spend an hour with YAH and think that is enough? Why did He put the entire day aside to spend with you, if you only want to spend part of it with Him? Surely that is extremely selfish and you will pay the price for that. Honour YAH and the day He set aside to spend with you; enjoy His company, while wallowing in His Word.
